Chalet, Apartment or Hotel? What Each One Gets You in Courchevel

Chalet, Apartment or Hotel? What Each One Gets You in Courchevel

Most people arrive at this decision with it already half made. They know roughly what they want to spend, and they assume that number determines the answer.

It doesn't. At almost every budget in Courchevel you have a real choice between the four, and the same money buys very different weeks depending on which way you go. A family of eight can spend the same sum on a catered chalet in Moriond, a large apartment in 1850 or two hotel rooms and a suite — and the three weeks would have almost nothing in common.

Here is what each option actually gets you.

The catered chalet

The format Courchevel is known for, and still the best answer for a group travelling together.

You take the whole building. A chef cooks breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner most nights. A host looks after the house. In many chalets a driver is on hand for the ski day and the evening. Nobody shops, nobody cooks, nobody argues about whose turn it is, and the group eats together at a table that belongs to them for the week.

What people underestimate is the social effect. A catered chalet turns a holiday into an occasion — which is why it dominates for milestone birthdays, multi-family weeks and anything where the point is the people rather than the skiing.

Best suited to: groups of eight or more, families with young children, and any week where the gathering is the reason for the trip.

Worth knowing: a catered chalet runs to a rhythm. Dinner is at a time, and the staff have hours. Groups who want to eat out four nights in five, or who keep very different schedules from one another, often get better value from a self-catered property with catering added on the nights they want it.

The self-catered chalet

The same buildings, without the staffing model — and increasingly what experienced groups choose.

You get the space, the privacy and the location of a chalet, and you decide what service sits on top. A chef for three dinners rather than six. A daily housekeeper but no host. Breakfast delivered, lunch ignored, dinner booked out. For groups who like Courchevel's restaurants and don't want to be home by eight to eat, this is often both cheaper and better.

It also suits longer stays. Two weeks in a catered chalet is a lot of set meals. Two weeks self-catered, with catering on the nights you want it, is a different and more relaxed proposition.

Best suited to: independent groups, repeat visitors, longer stays, and anyone who wants to spend their money on the property rather than the staffing.

Worth knowing: self-catered means the week has to be planned rather than delivered. That planning is exactly what a concierge is for — but it does need to happen, and it needs to happen before you arrive rather than on the Sunday.

The apartment

The most improved category in Courchevel and the one that has changed most in the last decade.

The stock is newer, particularly in Moriond and Village, and the best of it is very good indeed — proper ski rooms, generous living space, underground parking, and often a shared spa and pool within the residence that a chalet of equivalent price would not have. For couples, or for a family of four to six, an apartment frequently delivers a better building than the money would buy in chalet form.

It is also the category where value is most obvious. You are not paying for square metres you won't enter or a dining table for twelve.

Best suited to: couples, families of four to six, value-conscious groups, and anyone who wants a newer building.

Worth knowing: an apartment is part of a residence, so the front door, the lift and the spa are shared. If total privacy is the priority — and for some groups it is the entire priority — a chalet is the only format that delivers it.

The hotel

Courchevel has some of the finest hotels in the Alps, and there are three situations where a hotel beats everything else.

The first is short stays. Chalets and apartments in Courchevel run Saturday to Saturday, almost without exception. If you want four nights, or a Wednesday-to-Sunday, a hotel is the only thing that will take you.

The second is couples. Two people rattling around a chalet built for ten is poor value and slightly melancholy. A hotel puts you in the middle of things, with a restaurant, a spa and a bar you don't have to organise.

The third is service depth. A great hotel does things no chalet can — a spa open at seven, a kitchen open late, a concierge desk that has been solving problems in this resort for thirty years.

Best suited to: couples, short breaks, dates that don't fit the Saturday changeover, and guests who want service without hosting anyone.

Worth knowing: for a family, a hotel is usually the most expensive way to buy space, because you buy it by the room. Groups of six or more almost always get more for the money in a chalet or apartment — which is why we ask about numbers before we ask about format.

The question that decides it

Not budget. Numbers and dates.

If you are two people, or your dates don't run Saturday to Saturday, start with hotels. If you are four to six, start with apartments. If you are eight or more, start with chalets — and then decide whether you want the week catered or built around you.

Everything else is refinement.

What we do with this

We book all four. That is deliberate, and it is unusual — most agencies specialise in one format and will steer you into it.

Tell us how many are coming, what dates you're tied to and what you want the week to feel like, and we will tell you which format serves you best before we show you a single property. Sometimes that means recommending a hotel over a chalet we'd rather let. It is a better way to end up with a guest who comes back.
